Tanzania police issue fresh warning against nationwide demonstrations

The police recalled an update shared shortly after midnight on December 9, in which they assured citizens that joint security and defence teams would continue strengthening national security.

Tanzania’s Police Force has issued a fresh warning to groups accused of planning illegal nationwide demonstrations, saying security agencies have closely tracked their mobilisation efforts through online platforms.

In a public notice released on Wednesday, the police said they had worked overnight to ensure the country remained peaceful, following earlier alerts about attempts to disrupt economic and social activities.

They reiterated an update shared shortly after midnight on December 9, in which they assured citizens that joint security and defence teams would continue strengthening national security.

The notice stated that these operations were carried out “effectively and successfully”, allowing the country to wake up in a calm and safe state.

According to the statement, organisers who called for what they described as peaceful and indefinite demonstrations had circulated “13 criminal methods” through online clubs and other communication channels, allegedly aimed at paralysing national activities.

The police said they had monitored these groups for an extended period, including on December 9, to track their planning and mobilisation.

The Force said that after the organisers failed to hold the planned protests on December 9, they attempted to regroup and come out again on December 10, despite the activity being “contrary to the 1977 Constitution and the Police and Auxiliary Police Act”.

The notice reminded the public that the protests were banned on December 5 because they did not meet legal requirements.

The police warned the groups “not to proceed”, saying any attempt to endanger national stability or halt daily life would be met with firm action.

“We will take appropriate action to ensure the country remains safe and that peace-loving Tanzanians remain protected,” the statement said.

They urged citizens to continue with their daily routines while following instructions issued by the Defence and Security Agencies.

The notice said these measures were aimed at keeping the country safe and ensuring people remain secure.

“All these measures are being taken to ensure that our nation remains safe and that all of us, peace-loving Tanzanians, continue to remain secure at all times,” the statement added.
